ABOUT TIOMAN
The Tioman Island, in Malay we called Pulau Tioman is a duty-free island off Peninsular Malaysia’s east coast, acclaimed as a geological wonder, ecological paradise and one of Southeast Asia’s most beautiful travel destinations. It is located 32 kilometres (20 miles) off the east coast of the state, and is 21 kilometres (13 miles) long and 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) wide.
Gazetted as a marine park, the immediate waters are abundant with coral reefs and marine life – ideal for scuba diving and snorkelling. Much of the island is covered by pristine rainforest, home to several endemic wildlife species and suitable for nature explorations. Like mainland Malaysia, Tioman Island has a hot and humid climate, with sunny afternoons and warm evenings but cool nights. Temperatures are usually consistent and the calm weather peppered with occasional showers and storms. The tourist season peaks between May and August, when the weather generally displays the least rainfall.
Vibrant coral reefs reside under the sea waters off Tioman and neighbouring islands, as well as wrecks and caverns that attract a tropical variety of marine life, including fish, crustaceans and turtles. Most dive centers are concentrated in Kampung Tekek and Salang Beach, but smaller establishments are found at Paya, Juara, Genting and Ayer Batang villages.
There are 2 ways to go to Tioman Island, over land and across the sea, or through the air. The cheapest solution is to take the bus, buses drive from Kuala Lumpur to the fisherman’s village Mersing in about 5 hours; from there the ferry, operated by Bluewater Express or Cataferry, leaves to Tioman or to one of the neighboring islands within this group. The second option to get to Tioman Island is by direct flight from Kuala Lumpur’s Subang Airport or Singapore Changi Airport to Pulau Tioman Airport (nearby the town of Tekek). Berjaya Air (part of the luxurious Berjaya Resorts Group) takes you with its private jet to Tioman. This direct flight is the quickest way to get to Tioman, but it is definitely the most expensive way to get to the island.
